Federal Tax Deadline Not Affected
It's important to note that the extension only applies to California state taxes. The federal tax filing deadline remains April 18, 2023, for all taxpayers. However, the IRS is offering automatic extensions to individuals who cannot meet the April 18 deadline.
Disaster Relief Extension
The extension to November 16 specifically applies to taxpayers who lived in federally declared disaster areas during the recent floods. To qualify for the extension, taxpayers must have been living in a designated disaster area on or before the April 18 deadline.
Individuals Seeking Extension
Individuals who wish to request an extension beyond the November 16 deadline should file Form FTB 3519. This form must be filed by April 18, 2023, and will grant an automatic extension until October 15, 2024. Please note that extension requests do not extend the payment deadline, and any taxes owed must still be paid by November 16, 2023.
